About the Uniform

The scout uniform is one part of the scouting program. Uniforms are a place for scouts to show off the awards they have earned, and show their unit (Pack 345) and Den. Each scout has two uniforms and the event description will generally tell you which one to wear:

  • Class A > The formal uniform that we wear to Pack meetings, service projects and other times. You purchase this at the Scout Shop, or use our Uniform Library (see details below) to get a gently used uniform from the pack.

  • Class B > The Pack t-shirt that says "Pack 345" on the front. You get this from the pack when you pay your scout's annual dues for the first time. Additional pack t-shirts are available for purchase from the pack (in youth and adult sizes) for $12.

Some scout units require that the scouts wear ALL uniform parts. At Pack 345, we don't emphasize this as much, and we want scouting to be affordable for everyone. See below for some tips and tricks on how to save money!

Class A Uniform: What to buy and Where to buy it

    • Uniform checklist:

    • Tips and tricks:

      • You will need the Golden Gate Area Council shoulder patch. See picture to the right. When you shop at the Scout Shop, tell them that you're with a San Francisco unit and they should get you this shoulder patch.

      • Look to see if our Uniform Library has the parts you need. If so, these are available to you for free (and we encourage you to donate to the Uniform Library when your scout outgrows those uniform pieces)

      • You don't need to purchase the official scout pants. We would like scouts to wear pants, shorts or skorts that are the appropriate color for their uniform, but it doesn't need to be the official bottom parts. We discourage wearing jeans with their Class A uniform.

      • If it's cold outside, wear a long sleeve shirt (any color) underneath the uniform shirt

      • Badge Magic to iron on patches if you do not wish to sew. Sewing is better, but Badge Magic works.

      • The neckerchief is optional. Your scout will get a Pack 345 neckerchief (purple) when you pay their first year's dues.

      • If you sew it yourself, be sure to pay very close attention to the placement guide: Cub Scout Insignia Placement Guide. It's no fun to have to re-do the sewing!

      • Keep in mind that uniforms, Scout accessories, camping supplies, and other ‘Scout stuff’ make excellent birthday and holiday presents for your child or the Scouter in your family.

      • BSA rules state that if it was ever a valid uniform, it's still a valid uniform. You do NOT need to have the latest version of the shirt design, patches, etc.

    • Where to buy it:

      • The closest scout shop is the Peninsula Scout Shop in Foster City and the second closest is in Palo Alto. More information: https://pacsky.org/scout-shops/

        • You can phone ahead your order and pick it up at either. They will also mail the order for a small fee. Both of these scout shops can also sew all of the badges on for you for a small fee.

      • The next closest scout shops are in San Rafael, Pleasanton and San Jose. For a complete list of store locations, go to the store locator on the official BSA website scoutshop.org.

      • You can also buy MOST of the items online, but certain items such as the Golden Gate Area Council shoulder patch are only sold in the local stores.
